Fresh Off The Easel! My most sought after work featuring the MOON...

My newest moon paintings capture the shimmering, reflective quality of the night sky in the tropics. A focus on the soft, dreamy texture of the clouds being a pleasant reminder of the beauty and power of nature.

Call us to talk more about the art.

I had a blast painting this piece while really being able to express myself. The exuberant brushstrokes and exaggerating the size of the images was so much fun! Although the subject matter is so familiar to me, I was able to get into the nitty-gritty of some of the details such as the fish, lemons and the banana stock hanging from the hut. The full moon is seen glowing through the palm trees while enhancing the water’s edge.

This painting is an incredibly impactful statement piece featuring the drama and subject matter of Maui’s full moon.

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed painting it.

-Kim

Is there anything more beautiful than the glow emanating from a tropical moon? When I first arrived in Maui 30 years ago, among all of the island’s beautiful features, the thing that struck me with singularity were the magical night skies. It might have been the atmospheric moisture magnifying the light, but something made the stars move and dance in front of your eyes. When the moon rose, it was so luminous and huge, it lit up the landscape (and seascape) like firelight transforming our familiar island into a magical sanctuary for the 'Aumakua — the ancestral spirits of the Islands. In my moon paintings I attempt to conjure up the otherworldly luminosity that only a moonlit Maui night sky possesses.

Both paintings includes a solid wood floating frame, adding a rich element to bring out the skin tones of the wahine. You can also see what the painting would look like without a frame should you prefer that look.

For me, this painting has everything to do with being a wahine. It’s about two Polynesian women in the tropical rainforest having a heart to heart. One woman listening and the other woman giving advice. I love the leafy patterned background with the Matisse like cut-out influence. The plush ground they relax on allows the women a comfortable place to lie while connecting through conversation.

NEW Originals - Fresh off the easel featuring "Coconut Grove"

When I first traveled to Kauai 45 years ago, I remember being awestruck by the coconut groves, each one of them seemed to be its own secret garden of chaos and order, sturdiness and fluidity, with arching trees, flowing palm fronds and coconuts scattered like jewels on the ground. “So, this is what tropical paradise looks like”, I thought.

I return to the coconut groves whenever I want to experience wonder and solitude in my own secret garden. I am never disappointed. - Kim

Coconut

A coconut inside is brown
and sometimes I frawn
Cause the coconut is hard to open
It's very unbreakable and cant be broken
Inside there is milk and meat
Both are white and both are neat
I feel the liquid down my throat
Like a wave that hits the coast
The meat I take and eat like candy
Its sweet an yet not brandy

Figurative paintings from the archives, now available!

Delighted!

I’m thoroughly delighted to have one of my favorite figurative paintings of all time back in the Kim McDonald Art Gallery in Paia.

The gorgeous MAILE, size 24”x36” is now available. She is from a figurative series titled, “Forever In My Dreams”.

One of Maile’s unique attributes features a color palette that is more subdued than my usual brighter color palettes of late. The oil paints I chose feature earth-tone pigments enhancing glowing golden skin tones. This painting captures the essence of a Polynesian woman leisurely laying on her lauhala mat enjoying her solitary evening with a bowl of ripe mangoes by her side representing abundance.

MAILE is truly a jewel from my past.

If she speaks to you, please reach out to me.

“My mother bought me this painters smock when I was 4 years old knowing I was a budding artist, as I started painting and drawing when I was just 2 years old. My mother is who encouraged me throughout my life and worked hard to send me to a private art school. Without her support, I would have never become the professional artist I am today. Much of my work from preschool and kindergarten looks faintly similar to my work today. It’s fascinating that I found my own personal style stemming from when I was so young.” -Kim

Paradise Found in Tahiti

I have found PARADISE!

Where do I begin?

One of my biggest loves in life is visiting Tahiti, French Polynesia! I just returned home last night from my seventh trip to the islands. And I’m so excited about sharing some of my inspiration and adventures through my upcoming collection.

As you can tell from my past 30 years of art work, I’ve been heavily influenced and artistically energized by the Polynesian culture-and nothing goes deeper to stimulate my passion than having new experiences in French Polynesia.

I started off my trip on the sacred island of Moorea , staying in a beautiful house for two weeks with the most spectacular panoramic view of Oponomu bay. I was so taken by this memorable view, I will be creating a large-format painting of Oponomu Bay, surrounded by the lush landscape and its iconic mountain range- Shark Tooth. Stay tuned!

I also had the wonderful opportunity to travel around Mo’orea for five hours with Tearanui, a young native Polynesian guide. Tearauni shared many captivating stories about the Polynesian origin myths about Mo’orea and the outer islands. The mythology was so transporting, I will never look at the islands the same way again. The mountains, the ocean and the reef, plus the starry nights and the myths about the moon, will forever impact me and my art. You will no doubt see the effect of those legends in my upcoming work—and I have a strong feeling they will resonate through my paintings for years to come.

An opinionated guide to a couple of weeks in French Polynesia

With your indulgence, come along for the ride with me, and we'll explore the Tahitian Islands of French Polynesia!

Best diving and snorkeling in Tahiti,  French Polynesia

I was traveling with my friend Teri, a real traveller and citizen of the world. While we were on Moorea, we decided to take a Side adventure —a snorkeling/diving trip to the island of Fakarava.

What an amazing experience this was! The water had a hallucinatory clarity, and we were surrounded by every species of fish I had ever seen. It was as if we were suspended in a gigantic aquarium, in the middle of a fireworks display. I was overwhelmed by the most vivid intense bursts of patterns and colors everywhere I looked—“This is it”, I thought, “The bright confetti of Paradise."  I can’t wait to make those dazzling colors come to life in my paintings (this will be new for me—I have never painted our finny friends— but I am determined to do them justice!)

Tahitian Black Pearls

Black pearls cannot be found anywhere else in the world. They look amazing and are said to have magical qualities. Who am I to argue?  My girlfriend and I were obsessed with searching for and learning all about the creation of the Tahitian black pearl.  After visiting probably two dozen pearl stores, I can confidently say that Pearl Romance was my favorite. I met the owner Caroline. She was a pleasure to work with, and a wealth of knowledge about pearls. Best Pearl Store on Mo’orea!

Polynesian figurative Artwork:  The islands didn’t disappoint. I was pleasantly reminded how passionate and kind the Polynesian people are. I love to celebrate their sensuality, strength and their vulnerability in my paintings by telling their story in my own illustrative narrative way, highlighting their Beautiful expressions and innate charms. I will be Depicting the Polynesian people in their habitat  with their exotic tropical Island life. I will also be using vintage photographs 1940s and 1950s of Polynesian life  to give me clues about the time that’s passed.

I am looking forward to collaborating on all fronts. This will be the most cohesive collection of Polynesian-inspired art work I have ever embarked  upon .

Lunch with a view…

Snack Mahana has amazing food-- best on the island! The reviews are justifiably raves. You should get there by 11:30-- they only have one seating, and it fills up fast. Mostly full of locals.

Another great place for lunch is on a Motu (mini-island).The restaurant is called Cocoa Beach, and it is delicious!  You can paddle-board or canoe over to the motu, or they have a boat that will pick you up on the beach. It’s exquisite fresh fish along with barbecue items. Again, you’re right on the water overlooking the beautiful aqua blue coastline.

The local staple in Hawai is poke. In Tahiti, it is poisson cru. Whether you’re talking about poke, or ceviche, or poisson cru, you are talking about fresh raw fish marinated in lime to “cook” it. With Poisson cru, they add a divine smooth coconut juice marinade that makes it irresistible. Be sure to try it!

Dinner

My favorite place to have dinner was Mo’orea Beach Café, right on the water with spectacular sunset views. They featured mouth-watering sushi dishes, along with traditional French Polynesian food.

Gorgeous color palette of pareos at the local market.

TAHITI Dreaming... NEW release featuring "Mount Mau'aroa"

I just returned from a wonderful, life-changing trip to Tahiti, French Polynesia. This trip was exceptionally inspiring for me. Following the processes of my post-impressionistic idols (Matisse,Gaugin etc.) I tried to capture the essence of scenes in black and white sketches, which I will rely upon later to create full-scale color paintings.

My intentions were to capture the island and the people that live on it… The amazing colors of the ocean, the white sandy beaches with brightly-colored Tahitian canoes.

I love the quaint little houses and the simple dirt roads surrounded by the sky-high jagged mountain ranges. And, as during my previous trip, the gorgeous, kind-hearted Tahitian people always inspire me with my figurative work.

What’s the difference between a full moon and a crescent moon?
The first quarter moon (or a half moon) is when half of the lit portion of the moon is visible after the waxing crescent phase. A full moon is when we can see the entire lit portion of the moon. The full moon phase occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, called opposition.

The famous Flatbread Company in Paia... A favorite among many!

The cool, eclectic town of Pa’ia has several interesting restaurants. The best one, in my opinion is Flatbread! It is a must experience while on Maui. I have lived near Pa’ia for over 28 years and know the town well. When Flatbread first opened their doors it had a big impact on the community. It immediately became a central location on the North Shore as the gathering place for friends and families to get together. This authentic flatbread pizzeria is loved by many.

The menu is quite simple. They feature delicious array of flatbread pizzas and organic salads, along with scrumptious desserts. My favorites are, “organic goat cheese salad” and the  ”Pele Pesto” flatbread. For dessert, don’t miss out on the “little beach bakery brownie sundae,” served warm! They have daily specials with unique creative toppings on various flatbreads. It is amazing!

Another thing that draws me there is that someone who loves art owns Flatbread, Pa’ia! One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is all of the unique Hawaiian surf motif art decorating the walls throughout the restaurant. Flatbread’s founder is a dear friend of mine, Jay Gould from the East Coast. He is a huge art lover and collector. He owns several Flatbread restaurants throughout the United States, and each one is focused on local artists who embellish the walls.

I’m honored to be one of the artists presented throughout the restaurant. Jay has collected my work over many years for his personal collection, in addition to purchasing seven pieces of art for Flatbread in Pa’ia. Take a look around and see if you can’t spot my colorful Hawaiian surf paintings and Polynesian figurative work. “Night Shift” is one of my most popular prints ever! This piece has a place honor right above the bar and I couldn’t be more proud!

What to wear when dining at Flatbread?

This restaurant is super casual. Flip-flops, casual beach wear or island attire is the standard.

Reservations are encouraged for parties of eight or more, otherwise it’s first come first serve. I would suggest getting there a little early for dinner--sometimes there can be a wait out the door.

Enjoy your dining at Flatbread when you’re in Paia Town!

It Comes in WAVES...

Ho'olio in Hawai'i is here!

Winter in Hawai'i is here and we're excited for the big waves, salty air and trade winds.

What does winter mean to me, living in Hawaii?

Big waves and moody skies.

That’s exactly what I wanted to depict in my new wave series. In the winter months, at certain times of day, the sky can become dark and moody while the water glows turquoise. It is an otherworldly color palette that evokes strong emotions. I tried to capture this mood of nature in my latest series. I hope you like it.

Stay tuned for more from this series!

Winter in Hawai'i is always such a magical time of year. The big winter swells bring in professional surfers from all over the world. Some of my favorite things to enjoy are the atmospheric night skies, gorgeous sunsets and the humpback whales sometimes making their appearance as early as November.

We can’t talk about waves without talking about our favorite professional surfer on Maui, Kai Lenny!

Kai Lenny is one of the world’s most complete watermen.

He grew up on the big waves of Maui, and with supportive parents and world-class mentors, has had a meteoric rise.  He is now at the apex of the surfing world: His accomplishments are astonishing: he's won the gruelling 50km Molokai-to-Oahu Paddleboard World Champion race three times (once in the unlimited, once in the stock stand-up division) and he shattered the across the channel record on his foil board. He was on the Professional Windsurfing Association World Wave Tour, has been runner-up at the Kite Surf Pro World Championships, and he’s won the SUP world title eight times and counting. Last year he was runner up in the Big Wave World Tour. Yet through it all, he remains modest and humble. “My favorite thing in the world is riding a wave, so as long as I’m riding a wave, I’m happy.”

What a once-in-a- lifetime experience it has been to collaborate on artwork with my all-time favorite movie star Owen Wilson, for an ocean charity I am passionate about!

I have had the pleasure of being friends with Owen for many years, as he spends most of his off-time from making movies on Maui, regenerating his spirit through surfing.

Suitably motivated by the success of my collaboration with Kai Lenny creating an art piece to raise money for Surfrider Foundation, I joined forces with Owen, who is also a dedicated surfer. The concept was to create a board that is uniquely Owen, combining his footprints and autograph with my design aesthetic, and bringing them to life on a gorgeous cherry red gun surfboard.

The red color represents the passion that Owen has for the ocean. The waves represent the wild sea that rejuvenates Owen’s spirit. And the stylized monkey? Owen's spirit animal is the monkey. He was born on the Year of the Monkey and thought it was perfect power animal to represent him on the surfboard, along with his footprints. Monkeys are also associated with surfers throughout the world; I imagine because of surfers' agility, unpredictability and athletic prowess on the waves, which remind viewers of the extraordinary abilities of monkeys.

Owen is delighted, as am I, to contribute 100% of the proceeds to Surfrider Foundation, to aid in the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

Join our team! Can you think of a better way to be part of the solution?

It all started with a vision Kim had to give back to the community. Along side Kai Lenny and the Paia Youth and Cultural Center, she has started an exciting journey...

"What an amazing experience this has been to collaborate on artwork with one of my all-time favorite superstar athletes,  Kai Lenny. I have known Kai since he was a young boy and I have watched him grow up to become a World Champion. He is truly an inspiration.

Suitably motivated, I joined forces with Kai. I was inspired to develop a unique concept with my surfboard art, bringing the elements of his footprints and autograph, along with my design aesthetic, to life on a gorgeous aqua blue Gun Surfboard. The blue color represents the ocean,  the green and white represent the movement in the waves of the sea. The Mālolo or “Flying Fish” is something that connects Kai to the Hawaiian waters of Maui. He often sees them “flying” out of the water during his ocean adventures.

It has always been a dream of mine to  give back, get involved and do something impactful with my art. This is my something.

I am incredibly grateful to be able to work with Kai and Martin (Kai's dad). It's also been a wonderful, enlightening experience to share with the PYCC facilitators. What a heartfelt, meaningful organization. So far it has been a transcendent experience. The ingredients of Kai Lenny, PYCC, and my art are combining to create something magical; much greater than the sum of the parts!

Please enjoy and participate in this adventure! Buy great art, and raise money for PYCC’s mission of, “building community through our youth.”

It all started with a vision Kim had to give back to the community. Along side Kai Lenny and Surfrider Foundation, she has started an exciting journey...

"What an amazing experience this has been to collaborate on artwork with one of my all-time favorite superstar athletes,  Kai Lenny. I have known Kai since he was a young boy and I have watched him grow up to become a World Champion. He is truly an inspiration.

Suitably inspired, I have  joined forces with Kai and was moved to develop a unique concept with my surfboard art, bringing the elements of his footprints and autograph, along with my design aesthetic.  In turn bringing to life a gorgeous aqua blue gun surfboard. The blue color represents the ocean,  the green and white represent the movement in the waves of the sea. The shark is Kai's soul animal.  In the Polynesian culture, sharks represent power, strength and luck.

It has always been a dream of mine to  give back, get involved and do something impactful with my art. This is my something.

I am incredibly grateful to be able to work with Kai and Martin (Kai's dad/manager)  It's been a wonderful, enlightening experience to share with Surfrider Foundation's facilitators. What a heartfelt, meaningful group of people. So far it has been a transcendent experience. The ingredients of Kai, Surfrider Foundation, and my art are combining to create something magical.  Much greater than the sum of the parts! Please enjoy and participate in this adventure! Join our team, buy great art, and raise money for Surfrider's mission of saving beaches, oceans, and ultimately, our planet."
