How to collect vertical artwork

Fisherman’s Cove | Original Available

Aloha, cherished friends and collectors

I wanted to share with you some creative ideas on how to collect and own vertical works of art. The majority of the work I sell is horizontal, but there’s such an incredible opportunity with a vertical piece of art. A couple of suggestions that work well for many of my collectors: You can place it at the end of the hallway between two windows. Also, a vertical format can create a stimulating composition on your wall, creating positive and negative space to enliven your interior walls. Below are some of my favorite pieces that are now available as original artwork in my gallery. They include some of my most popular collected vertical limited edition prints. I invite you to envision the unexpected (vertical) possibilities!

A locals review of Maui's Mama's Fish House Restaurant

Why Mama's Fish House Restaurant? What makes Mama's so special?

EVERYTHING!
If you have had the good fortune to dine at this extraordinary world-famous restaurant you will most likely find yourself nodding along with everything I’m about to say.

Mama’s Fish House restaurant is my happy place. You can find me there once or twice a week when I’m on island, either sitting at one of the two authentic handcrafted Koa bars or dining at one of their tables (clad in beautiful Polynesian blue tribal tablecloths), gazing at the extraordinary view.

It’s a magical, wonderful island experience, located on the north shore of Maui.

Local fishermen with the fresh catch of the day! It really doesn’t get much better then that.

What will you likely experience at Mama’s Fish House?

Your ethereal adventure will start with the parking valets welcoming you with a generous smile when you first arrive. This Tahitian-influenced open-air tropical breeze restaurant has been rightly famous for generations, and you will see why. From its delicious seafood to its incredibly gracious professional staff, this restaurant has it all. From celebratory signature tropical drinks to delicious fresh fish entrées caught by local fishermen, to mouthwatering appetizers and scrumptious desserts—all with a marvelous wine list to complement any of your food choices. It’s definitely pricey, but worth it!

This beloved Maui restaurant will enhance any visit to the islands-- and I would even venture to say it will be one of the highlights of your trip to Hawaii.

Oh, and did I mention it is one of the only oceanfront restaurants on Maui’s North Shore? Because of its beach-access locale, Mama’s has a most spectacular view with gorgeous sunsets. Bring your camera! You won’t want to miss the photo op before you dine for a delicious lunch or dinner.

What are FUN & entertaining things to do before or after visiting Mama’s?
If you arrive early, have a stroll through colorful, bohemian Paia town just before Mama’s. For thrills, go to Ho’okipa (just past Mama’s) and watch some of the best surfers and wind surfers in the world surf the break. If you are a naturalist, the right side of Ho’okipa beach has huge sea turtles to observe up close, you might even see a protected Hawaiian Monk Seal.

My work features much of Maui’s Hawaiian lifestyle and landscapes, but my number one selling subject matter is one you will recognize immediately—it is the spectacular view from Mama’s Fish House! The restaurant owners have always been great collectors of mine and have been incredibly supportive. I cherish the honor of having seven paintings in the collection of Mama’s Fish House restaurant—so keep an eye out when you’re visiting Mama’s and I’m sure you’ll see one of my paintings on display.

Why go early to Mama’s? For the unparalleled photo-ops!
You’ll definitely want to go early-- at least 20 minutes early. First check in with the charming staff at the hostess stand. Then take some of the most spectacular pictures you have taken in your entire life on the pristine beach, especially at sunset. Actually, any time of day! I have many photos and I mean probably hundreds of photos taken on the beach with the coconut trees, authentic Polynesian canoes on the beautiful sandy beach, with a soft shoreline break. Each one fills my heart, as it will yours.

What should you wear to Mama’s?
This is one of my favorite questions. Personally I love getting decked out to go to Mama’s. It’s one of the few restaurants that celebrate both high end and casual island-chic attire. It’s an open-air restaurant, so If you have a late seating it can get a little chilly at night during certain times a year. You may want to bring a light sweater or a wrap. Men will often wear an “Aloha” shirt, as we call them in Hawaii. Flip-flops, heels or island casual shoes, as you might take a stroll in the sand.

What are some my favorite cocktails?
The bartenders at Mama's are some of my buddies. They’re great conversationalists and incredibly well-trained mixologists.

One of my favorite cocktails is the “Pau Hana”—a local favorite— Guava juice, Tahitian lime, and Bombay gin—scented with ginger! Delicious!

Another one I would recommend is called the “Pink Floyd,” named after Floyd Christenson, one of the owners. This unique drink is rightfully famous-- Elderflower liqueur, Tahitian lime, cranberry, & Maui Pau vodka.
Of course there’s the epic, “Mama’s Mai Tai”-- I find this colorful drink a little sweet before dinner. But according to everyone, it’s a winner.

And then God created appetizers!
I don’t know what else to say except their appetizers are my favorite dishes in the restaurant. I often just get two appetizers-- one for a starter, and one for dinner. Or you share several with a friend at the bar. Don’t miss out on the appetizers (aka “pupus” in Hawaii).

Here are some of my favorites…
Opakapaka Tahitian in freshly opened coconut with Hana lime and coconut milk.
Shrimp wontons with macadamia nut sauce, Yum.
Sashimi trio is my favorite appetizer. Their fresh-caught fish changes nightly depending on what the local fisherman bring home. This dish melts in your mouth-- it’s incredible.

What are the most popular entrées?

Although they have alternatives to fish, it’s a fresh seafood restaurant! That is where they get their world-class reputation—only serving the freshest fish caught by local fishermen, just hours before your dining experience. Having dined there hundreds of times, here are some of my favorites:

The infamous Mahi-Mahi stuffed with lobster and crab baked in macadamia nut crust, a crowd pleaser.

One of my current favorites is the Ono sautéed with garlic, capers, mushrooms and roasted kabacha .

Check out their menu online at https://www.mamasfishhouse.com/ to see all the choices.

Note!! The menu changes daily depending on the fish that come in!

What’s the best dessert?
Everyone seems to be ordering and photographing the Black Pearl dessert. Even though it is amazing (and photogenic) it’s not my favorite. My favorites are the Hana banana crisp with homemade Tahitian vanilla ice cream, and my second love--coconut chiffon cake made with fresh Maui coconut. It goes perfectly with the fresh-brewed local coffee. Or skip the traditional desserts and opt for an espresso martini. Delicious!

Why do people choose Mama's for celebratory dates?
Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, Mama’s is the place to go on- island when you want to create an indelible experience that will be remembered for years. Anniversaries, birthdays, engagement parties, you name it. If it is a once-in-a-lifetime event, it is happening at Mama’s. Don’t forget to let the staff know ahead of time what you’re celebrating, they may just have a flower lei for you when you arrive.

Who are the owners of Mama’s Fish House, and who created the amazing interior works of art?

The late Doris and Floyd Christiansen were the proud founders and dedicated owners of the restaurant. What I admired most about Doris and Floyd was their inspiration for the unique—they are looking to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They clearly strived for excellence at every turn. You’ll be wowed as soon as you enter the restaurant and have a walk around, either before or after dinner. Be sure to take the time to appreciate all of the unique interior spaces, created by one of my good friends and one of the greatest designers in Hawai’i, Bill Cole. He is a design genius and you’ll see what I mean when you experience the extraordinary aesthetics of Mama's Fish House restaurant.

Celebrating Mama’s Fish House and all the memorable wonderful times we’ve had there!

How do you pay homage to a legend? By celebrating it in its own dedicated painting series!

I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this series of original oil paintings, it’s a first for me to explore and paint the gorgeous view from Mama’s Fish House dining room, looking out over beautiful Mama’s Beach with the familiar canoe and stunning sunset. Mama’s Fish House restaurant is one of my favorite places to hang out on Maui. I love the staff and I love the dining experience, but mostly I love the view! I have tried to capture the  jeweled blue colors in the night sky, the glistening ocean, the flickering light of the tiki torches and the mysterious night moon.

Hopefully these paintings will evoke that “nowhere else in the world” feeling that you experienced when you gazed out from our favorite island haven! - Kim McDonald

An Artist’s Review of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Aerial view of the Paul Gauguin cruise liner in Moorea

La Oraana! My name is Kim McDonald and I’m an artist from the island of Maui. My focus and subject matter have been primarily painting the majestic landscapes of the islands of the North and South Pacific while highlighting the beauty and grace of the Polynesian culture.

Recently I had the great pleasure to have been chosen to be one of the guest lecturers on Paul Gauguin Cruises. I spoke about my life's work as an artist of the post-impressionist genre. Needless to say, one of my biggest inspirations is the work by Paul Gauguin, particularly the body of work he did while living in French Polynesia, so this was an opportunity to revisit my favorite place on earth and share my love for the South Pacific (while on board a luxurious vessel dedicated to exploring every aspect of this paradise!).

Why Paul Gauguin Cruises? What makes Paul Gauguin Cruises so special?

The Ship-MS Paul Gauguin

From an artist’s perspective, the ship is a marvel—it reflects a deep understanding of the aesthetic of Paul Gauguin, the Pacific atolls and the lush tropical islands. The interiors are bathed in ocean color palettes– almost an extension of what you see when you look out your window. Onboard, you are immersed in Gauguin’s world. The fabrics could have emanated out of a Gauguin painting. In the gallery, there are eye-catching red-orange chairs whose color could have come right out of his “When Will You Marry?”. As if that weren’t enough in the gallery there are three actual original Gauguin’s art pieces! The cabins are sumptuous and spotless, and each one has a panoramic view of the most endless scenery in the Pacific.

What are the excursions like on the Paul Gauguin cruises?

I’ll get back to the ship in a second, but before I do, it’s time to enumerate all of the amazing adventures, shopping opportunities, delicious discoveries, and must-see experiences on our Odyssey.

PGC private beach

What is the experience like on the private island of Paul Gauguin cruises?

Between Bora-Bora and Moorea, we slipped off into our own private island, where we were greeted by the spirits of the island, “The Gauguines & the Gauguins”, an exuberant, talented group of local dancers, musicians, guides, and masters of all things Polynesian

Mo'orea

Mo'orea is my all-time favorite island—my spirit animal! Besides the spectacular scenery, we were able to get up close and personal with bottlenose and spinner dolphins, sharks, rays, and constellations of bright colorful tropical reef fish.

The view that inspired Moonrise over Mo’orea

O Tahiti E

These Moorean natives are described as “The Fabulous professional folkloric dance group of Tahiti''. That description does not do this Broadway–worthy extravaganza justice. It is soulful and spiritual, and perhaps I imagined it, but I could feel the bone-deep spirit of the islands in the rhythm and joy of this group.

O Tahiti E dance group

The Cook Islands

PGC will shuttle you across the unbelievably clear water to untouched, uninhabited islands where you can spend the day snorkeling, shell-collecting, or perfecting your tan in Paradise.

On the way to Cook Island

Bora Bora

Wow! This barrier reef journey offers (amazingly inexpensive) helicopter tours, wave-runners (great for thrill-seekers), lunchtime jaunts to secluded islands, scuba diving, and crystal clear lagoons. Bora Bora and Moorea were my greatest sources of artistic inspiration.

The mountain range that inspired the painting “Bora Bora”

OK, full disclosure – I am obsessed with pearls. And in my many years of admiring, bargaining for, and collecting pearls, I have discovered two favorites. One is the on-board gallery at PGC, and the other is the fabulous family-owned “Pearl Romance” with 2 shops on Mo’orea.

What is the most memorable aspect of Paul Gauguin cruises?

Whether dining, exploring, or just relaxing on board, the defining essence of an experience, the thing that makes it memorable, is the grace and manners of the staff. Every experience is part theater—if you are dining and have a surly and dismissive waiter, the whole evening is ruined, you are just eating food.

On the other hand, a knowledgeable, heartfelt, genuine, delightful waiter elevates the whole experience to something transcendent: one-of-a-kind and memorable. The waitstaff on PGC are almost too good to be true—by the second day, they know where you like to sit, whether you take cream in your coffee, your favorite wine choice with fish—it’s indescribable. I have been to many 5-star hotels, 3-star restaurants, etc. and none came close. Honestly, one of the things I will remember the most, among the islands, activities, and perfect sunsets, is how exceptional the staff (including Captain Renè Paul Boucher and Cruise Director Gaëlle Pichon) was. Simply brilliant.

What else separates Paul Gauguin Cruises from other cruise lines?

Unless you are on Harvard Alumni Cruise lines, I doubt that you could match the caliber of presentations given in the Paul Gauguin state-of-the-art lecture hall. Pascal Erhel is a renowned cultural anthropologist who makes the origin story of the South Pacific come to life with encyclopedic knowledge and enthusiasm. Estelle Davies is a world-traveled and world-renowned marine biologist with a daunting resume-I won’t even try to list her degrees. She gave a mesmerizing presentation on the formation of the islands, the aquatic ecosystem, phylum chondrichthyes (sharks and rays), and her work with Jacques Cousteau, among other topics. In my presentation, I dove into my 30 years as a successful post-impressionist oil painter, my love for the islands, my inspirations (Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keefe, Paul Gaugin, Vincent Van Gogh) and the process Post-Impressionism: depicting not what you see, but what you feel.

What do I wear to dinner on the Paul Gauguin cruises?

I love to dress up for dinner- who doesn’t? Paul Gauguin Cruise’s three elegant restaurants provide the perfect setting for showing off your fun tropical elegant attire. The dress code says "Country club casual, no jeans or shorts “, But remember, this is a French cruise line, and the French know how to dress. So take this as a perfect opportunity to wear those colorful, exotic dresses worthy of Moana — after all, we’re on a magical voyage through the most dream-like islands in the world. Why not dress for it?

Mo'orea ocean excursion

What are some of the best activities to do on Paul Gauguin Cruises?

You should definitely check out the PGC website—my head is still spinning from the banquet of activities we were offered every day (and night), but I enjoyed all of these immensely:

  • Lei-making

  • Piano Bar

  • Fitness Center

  • Deep Massage /Spa

  • Disco (La Palette)

  • Island jaunts

  • Scuba

  • Snorkeling (photo from the website)

  • Shark swims

  • Stand-Up Paddling

What are the best Hotels in Papeete, Tahiti?

(While these choices look like generic recommendations, they’re not. I’ve stayed in everything from tree houses to houseboats, and these 2 hotels are exceptional–luxurious without losing the special local Tahitian touches that let you know you’re deep in French Polynesia.)

Hilton Hotel Tahiti, Papeete (800 293 0718) This hotel would be my number one choice. It’s state-of-the-art and has incredible views of Mo’orea at sunset. The rooms are opulent, and the morning breakfast was delicious.

Intercontinental, Tahiti, resort and spa (689 40 86 51 10) This would be my second choice. It’s very Polynesian, and it has huts out over the water. Great rooms, good food, friendly staff, local vibe—what more could you ask?

The view from Papeete

What is there to do in Papeete, Tahiti?

I’ve been to French Polynesia over a dozen times now and I spent a couple of months in Papeete over 25 years ago. I know this town pretty well and have found many hidden treasures here.

Are there any museums in Papeete, Tahiti?

Yes! I visited the new museum just outside of Papeete, called Tahiti and Island’s Museum. This is a must-see, well worth experiencing. Very Polynesian modern. It’s a small museum, but it has remarkable historical findings. I would highly suggest spending two hours so you can take the fascinating headset-guided tour. The museum features Tikkis, cultural iconography, early Polynesian canoes, different formats of paddles, and a comprehensive history of the origins of the Polynesian peoples.

Historical carvings inside the Tahiti and Island’s Museum

Downtown Papeete:

What is the best bookstore in downtown Papeete, Tahiti?

Odyssey Tahiti Bookstore: Directly across from Notre Dame Cathedral is my favorite bookstore in the whole world – it has a wealth of information. The Odyssey never fails to provide me with an incredible source of inspiration for my current works, with picturesque Polynesian coffee table books, historical and vintage photography books of French Polynesia. It also has souvenirs and a handsome selection of art supplies.

Are there pearl stores in Papeete, Tahiti?

Is the sky blue? There are dozens of Pearl shops in Papeete to wander through and get familiar with what you like, but I would recommend saving your pearl BUYING for the on-board boutique, which features an exquisite line of Grade A designer pearl jewelry, created specifically for the discerning clientele of PGC.

What is the name of the iconic yellow church in downtown Papeete?

Paris isn't the only capital that boasts a Notre Dame Cathedral. It is also the name of one of Papeete’s most popular landmarks. The interior of this charming cathedral features both European and Polynesian design elements.

Tahitian Pearls

Are there Ferries to Mo'orea?

Catching the ferry to Mo'orea is a great outing for the day.

The two commercial fairies are called Aremiti and Tervau. It is a quick jump over to Mo’orea – about a half-hour ferry ride. It is a great way to steal an extra day on this wonderful island!

What is the name of the market in downtown Papeete?

One block from Notre Dame church is a fabulous local market called "Municipal Market”. This extensive marketplace is full of fresh fruits, fresh seafood and meats, as well as fresh tropical flowers, souvenirs, and Polynesian handcrafted goods.

How would you sum up a Paul Gauguin Cruise Vacation?

You know how in some movies the person is looking at a painting and then magically steps into it, and the whole world depicted by the painting unfolds in real life? I felt that way on the PGC ship—it was a portal, a magic carpet to the world that Gauguin depicted, (complete with friendly guides and wave-runners!) I can only hope that you get to share this experience!

KIM McDONALD’S SOUTH PACIFIC

This 11-night odyssey showcases the region's incredible diversity of scenery, from Aitutaki's low-lying islands to the jagged peaks and deep valleys of fertile Rarotonga, which was simply called “Paradise” by the first European explorers. Continue to the Society Islands to delight in the South Pacific's crown jewels — Bora Bora, Taha'a, Huahine, and Moorea.

Highlights

While in the Cook Islands, call upon Aitutaki, a tiny island that's home to one of the world's most spectacular lagoons.

Spend a relaxing day on Motu Mahana, our very own private islet, complete with white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, a barbecue lunch, drinks served in coconuts, and a floating lagoon bar.

The waters around Moorea are home to an amazing array of sea creatures. Take an optional SCUBA excursion to swim among the sea turtles and vibrant schools of fish.

In Bora Bora, spend time at our exclusive white-sand beach on a motu enjoying snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, volleyball, and stunning views of Mount Otemanu.

My Gauguin—An artist’s legacy

The Gauguin experience is proud to present celebrated post -impressionist Kim McDonald, in a series of on-board talks exploring Gauguin’s profound influence on her work and life.

In “Talks With Artist Kim McDonald“, Kim will explore how the Frenchman influenced her artistic approach, from color theory to choice of subject matter, to symbolic talismans to the artists’ crusade—conjuring images of paradise to bring grace and beauty to life in our modern world.

Hawai'i and the South Pacific’s pre-eminent artist, according to a friend, "Eats, sleeps and breathes the tropics, and then somehow magically transforms her experience into art". It's true; whether paddle boarding in Maui, outrigger canoeing, diving for pearls, or journeying up jungle trails to Tahiti’s breathtaking waterfalls, Kim McDonald revels in the lush beauty and excitement of the islands — both as an acute observer and enthusiastic participant.

Perhaps that is why her works resonate so deeply. Because she doesn't just paint what she sees, she paints what she knows. Kim has spent decades exploring: the uncanny light and shadows, the liquid moon, the impossibly lush colors and fragrances, the rich, strange music of the surf and the reef, the exhilaration of being an active part of it all — Kim knows her islands.

And she has created a gift of them, through her art, just for us.

It is our distinct honor at Paul Gauguin Cruises, that Kim will be joining us on special trips, providing fellow enthusiasts with a fascinating multimedia exploration of Paul Gauguin’s artistic love affair with Tahiti, and 120 years later, her own. Part history, part art theory, part poetry, Kim’s talk will explore the unparalleled allure of the islands—and the artistic challenge involved in evoking that beauty on canvas. (For a lucky few, you will be invited to join Kim at her artist table to continue the conversation!)

Having Kim onboard to provide in-depth layers of knowledge and experience to our guests is a special gift—one we know you will appreciate when you experience her in person!

Fresh Off The Easel! My most sought after work featuring the MOON...

My newest moon paintings capture the shimmering, reflective quality of the night sky in the tropics. A focus on the soft, dreamy texture of the clouds being a pleasant reminder of the beauty and power of nature.

Call us to talk more about the art.

808-757-8211 or email Kim@KimMcDonald.com

I had a blast painting this piece while really being able to express myself. The exuberant brushstrokes and exaggerating the size of the images was so much fun! Although the subject matter is so familiar to me, I was able to get into the nitty-gritty of some of the details such as the fish, lemons and the banana stock hanging from the hut. The full moon is seen glowing through the palm trees while enhancing the water’s edge.

This painting is an incredibly impactful statement piece featuring the drama and subject matter of Maui’s full moon.

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed painting it.

-Kim

Is there anything more beautiful than the glow emanating from a tropical moon? When I first arrived in Maui 30 years ago, among all of the island’s beautiful features, the thing that struck me with singularity were the magical night skies. It might have been the atmospheric moisture magnifying the light, but something made the stars move and dance in front of your eyes. When the moon rose, it was so luminous and huge, it lit up the landscape (and seascape) like firelight transforming our familiar island into a magical sanctuary for the 'Aumakua — the ancestral spirits of the Islands. In my moon paintings I attempt to conjure up the otherworldly luminosity that only a moonlit Maui night sky possesses.

Paul Gauguin Cruises Presents "Talks With Artist Kim McDonald"

Supersize Painting Fresh Off The Easel! "Over The Moon For You"

A Maui moonscape, one of my most sought after subject matters…

This is a large scale painting

Size 40” x 60”

808-757-8211 or email Kim@KimMcDonald.com

I had a blast painting this piece while really being able to express myself. The exuberant brushstrokes and exaggerating the size of the images was so much fun! Although the subject matter is so familiar to me, I was able to get into the nitty-gritty of some of the details such as the fish, lemons and the banana stock hanging from the hut. The full moon is seen glowing through the palm trees while enhancing the water’s edge.

Because of the large size, this painting is an incredibly impactful statement piece featuring the drama and subject matter of Maui’s full moon.

“Over The Moon For You” warms my heart and I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed painting it.

Both paintings includes a solid wood floating frame, adding a rich element to bring out the skin tones of the wahine. You can also see what the painting would look like without a frame should you prefer that look.

For me, this painting has everything to do with being a wahine. It’s about two Polynesian women in the tropical rainforest having a heart to heart. One woman listening and the other woman giving advice. I love the leafy patterned background with the Matisse like cut-out influence. The plush ground they relax on allows the women a comfortable place to lie while connecting through conversation.

NEW Originals - Fresh off the easel featuring "Coconut Grove"

When I first traveled to Kauai 45 years ago, I remember being awestruck by the coconut groves, each one of them seemed to be its own secret garden of chaos and order, sturdiness and fluidity, with arching trees, flowing palm fronds and coconuts scattered like jewels on the ground. “So, this is what tropical paradise looks like”, I thought.

I return to the coconut groves whenever I want to experience wonder and solitude in my own secret garden. I am never disappointed. - Kim

Coconut

A coconut inside is brown
and sometimes I frawn
Cause the coconut is hard to open
It's very unbreakable and cant be broken
Inside there is milk and meat
Both are white and both are neat
I feel the liquid down my throat
Like a wave that hits the coast
The meat I take and eat like candy
Its sweet an yet not brandy

Figurative paintings from the archives, now available!

Delighted!

I’m thoroughly delighted to have one of my favorite figurative paintings of all time back in the Kim McDonald Art Gallery in Paia.

The gorgeous MAILE, size 24”x36” is now available. She is from a figurative series titled, “Forever In My Dreams”.

One of Maile’s unique attributes features a color palette that is more subdued than my usual brighter color palettes of late. The oil paints I chose feature earth-tone pigments enhancing glowing golden skin tones. This painting captures the essence of a Polynesian woman leisurely laying on her lauhala mat enjoying her solitary evening with a bowl of ripe mangoes by her side representing abundance.

MAILE is truly a jewel from my past.

If she speaks to you, please reach out to me.

“My mother bought me this painters smock when I was 4 years old knowing I was a budding artist, as I started painting and drawing when I was just 2 years old. My mother is who encouraged me throughout my life and worked hard to send me to a private art school. Without her support, I would have never become the professional artist I am today. Much of my work from preschool and kindergarten looks faintly similar to my work today. It’s fascinating that I found my own personal style stemming from when I was so young.” -Kim

Paradise Found in Tahiti

I have found PARADISE!

Where do I begin?

One of my biggest loves in life is visiting Tahiti, French Polynesia! I just returned home last night from my seventh trip to the islands. And I’m so excited about sharing some of my inspiration and adventures through my upcoming collection.

As you can tell from my past 30 years of art work, I’ve been heavily influenced and artistically energized by the Polynesian culture-and nothing goes deeper to stimulate my passion than having new experiences in French Polynesia.

I started off my trip on the sacred island of Moorea , staying in a beautiful house for two weeks with the most spectacular panoramic view of Oponomu bay. I was so taken by this memorable view, I will be creating a large-format painting of Oponomu Bay, surrounded by the lush landscape and its iconic mountain range- Shark Tooth. Stay tuned!

I also had the wonderful opportunity to travel around Mo’orea for five hours with Tearanui, a young native Polynesian guide. Tearauni shared many captivating stories about the Polynesian origin myths about Mo’orea and the outer islands. The mythology was so transporting, I will never look at the islands the same way again. The mountains, the ocean and the reef, plus the starry nights and the myths about the moon, will forever impact me and my art. You will no doubt see the effect of those legends in my upcoming work—and I have a strong feeling they will resonate through my paintings for years to come.

An opinionated guide to a couple of weeks in French Polynesia

With your indulgence, come along for the ride with me, and we'll explore the Tahitian Islands of French Polynesia!

Best diving and snorkeling in Tahiti,  French Polynesia

I was traveling with my friend Teri, a real traveller and citizen of the world. While we were on Moorea, we decided to take a Side adventure —a snorkeling/diving trip to the island of Fakarava.

What an amazing experience this was! The water had a hallucinatory clarity, and we were surrounded by every species of fish I had ever seen. It was as if we were suspended in a gigantic aquarium, in the middle of a fireworks display. I was overwhelmed by the most vivid intense bursts of patterns and colors everywhere I looked—“This is it”, I thought, “The bright confetti of Paradise."  I can’t wait to make those dazzling colors come to life in my paintings (this will be new for me—I have never painted our finny friends— but I am determined to do them justice!)

Tahitian Black Pearls

Black pearls cannot be found anywhere else in the world. They look amazing and are said to have magical qualities. Who am I to argue?  My girlfriend and I were obsessed with searching for and learning all about the creation of the Tahitian black pearl.  After visiting probably two dozen pearl stores, I can confidently say that Pearl Romance was my favorite. I met the owner Caroline. She was a pleasure to work with, and a wealth of knowledge about pearls. Best Pearl Store on Mo’orea!

Polynesian figurative Artwork:  The islands didn’t disappoint. I was pleasantly reminded how passionate and kind the Polynesian people are. I love to celebrate their sensuality, strength and their vulnerability in my paintings by telling their story in my own illustrative narrative way, highlighting their Beautiful expressions and innate charms. I will be Depicting the Polynesian people in their habitat  with their exotic tropical Island life. I will also be using vintage photographs 1940s and 1950s of Polynesian life  to give me clues about the time that’s passed.

I am looking forward to collaborating on all fronts. This will be the most cohesive collection of Polynesian-inspired art work I have ever embarked  upon .

Lunch with a view…

Snack Mahana has amazing food-- best on the island! The reviews are justifiably raves. You should get there by 11:30-- they only have one seating, and it fills up fast. Mostly full of locals.

Another great place for lunch is on a Motu (mini-island).The restaurant is called Cocoa Beach, and it is delicious!  You can paddle-board or canoe over to the motu, or they have a boat that will pick you up on the beach. It’s exquisite fresh fish along with barbecue items. Again, you’re right on the water overlooking the beautiful aqua blue coastline.

The local staple in Hawai is poke. In Tahiti, it is poisson cru. Whether you’re talking about poke, or ceviche, or poisson cru, you are talking about fresh raw fish marinated in lime to “cook” it. With Poisson cru, they add a divine smooth coconut juice marinade that makes it irresistible. Be sure to try it!

Dinner

My favorite place to have dinner was Mo’orea Beach Café, right on the water with spectacular sunset views. They featured mouth-watering sushi dishes, along with traditional French Polynesian food.

Gorgeous color palette of pareos at the local market.

A locals review of Mama's Fish House Restaurant on Maui

IMG_4327.JPG

My Ohana and I a few years back, posing on the infamous coconut tree. Look at the MOON!

My Ohana and I a few years back, posing on the infamous coconut tree. Look at the MOON!

Do you recognize the blue tribal design? It is featured on the tablecloths throughout the restaurant! I love the vintage Hawai'i feel.

TAHITI Dreaming... NEW release featuring "Mount Mau'aroa"

I just returned from a wonderful, life-changing trip to Tahiti, French Polynesia. This trip was exceptionally inspiring for me. Following the processes of my post-impressionistic idols (Matisse,Gaugin etc.) I tried to capture the essence of scenes in black and white sketches, which I will rely upon later to create full-scale color paintings.

My intentions were to capture the island and the people that live on it… The amazing colors of the ocean, the white sandy beaches with brightly-colored Tahitian canoes.

I love the quaint little houses and the simple dirt roads surrounded by the sky-high jagged mountain ranges. And, as during my previous trip, the gorgeous, kind-hearted Tahitian people always inspire me with my figurative work.

Below is an example of what I will be doing in the upcoming months—transforming my real-time compositional sketches into fully-realized, large, colorful oil paintings which hopefully evoke the magic and beauty of these mystical islands.

Just released! My first painting of the year - By MAUI artist Kim McDonald

I am excited to release the first completed painting of 2022. My effervescent moonscapes are one of the most sought-after subject matter. This shape works well over a bed, sofa or entry way table. Stay tuned for more from this series!

What’s the difference between a full moon and a crescent moon?
The first quarter moon (or a half moon) is when half of the lit portion of the moon is visible after the waxing crescent phase. A full moon is when we can see the entire lit portion of the moon. The full moon phase occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, called opposition.

Do you prefer a frame or no frame?

Kim McDonald paints around the edges of the canvas to give collectors the option to display the artwork without a frame. It's a design choice based on what you prefer. Your local framer will have many choices to choose from.
