FRESH OFF THE EASEL: "BENEATH THE SILVER MOON"

I finished Beneath the Silver Moon late last night, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

I was so excited to get into the studio every day while I was painting this one. As I painted, I found myself looking at the landscape a little differently. New ideas kept showing up, and it felt like I was discovering another layer of my artistic journey. Those moments are such a gift. They remind me there’s always something new waiting to be explored.

I played with a slightly different color palette, pairing a calm, glowing sky with a rich, dark ocean. I simplified the mountains into one silhouette so your eye could rest on the moon. I wanted it to feel soft, luminous, and almost as if its light was washing over everything it touched.

The beach was just plain fun to paint. I picked up a big brush, loosened up, and let those bold pinks and oranges sweep across the canvas. I’ve always loved the colors Paul Gauguin used in Tahiti, and I think a little of that spirit found its way into this painting.

I also brought back something I hadn’t done in years, a vintage floral pattern along the bottom. It reminded me of some of my early work, and it just felt right. The little turquoise flowers look as though they’re bathing in moonlight too.

More than anything, I wanted this painting to capture one of those magical tropical evenings when the world becomes quiet, the moon lights the ocean like silver, and you can’t help but imagine jumping into the warm water for a midnight swim.

I hope Beneath the Silver Moon brings you that same feeling of peace, wonder, and adventure every time you look at it.

Ohana means family in Polynesian culture.

The first time I traveled to French Polynesia, I spent the entire summer, mostly on the beautiful island of Mo‘orea.

I arrived as a visitor, but I left feeling like family.

The kindness and generosity of the people welcomed me into their homes, their lives, and their hearts. It was an experience that has stayed with me ever since.

I’ve returned to French Polynesia—especially Moorea—a dozen times over the years, always coming home with renewed inspiration. The luminous turquoise waters, vibrant colors, and spirit of the islands continue to find their way into my paintings.

When I returned from that very first journey, this was the first painting I created. It remains one of the most meaningful paintings of my career, and I’m grateful it’s still part of my personal collection.

Sometimes an old favorite deserves another moment in the light. I've decided to bring this piece out of retirement as a limited release of fine art prints, and it feels so meaningful to share it with you again.

Last night was a full Blue Moon, which only happens once in a while here in Hawai’i.

It’s also a micro-moon, meaning it will look a little smaller and softer in the sky; I love that.

Not everything has to be big and dramatic to be beautiful. Sometimes the quiet moments are the ones that stay with us.
