There’s something about Maui’s North Shore that makes you slow down in the best way.
I’ve lived and worked here for years, and I’m still amazed at how much this part of the island offers. From quiet mornings by the sea to unforgettable meals and tucked-away treasures, here are my favorite things to do on the North Shore of Maui—shared from the heart, like I would to a friend visiting for the first time.
1. Watch the Surfers at Ho’okipa Beach Park
Ho’okipa is legendary for a reason. It’s where some of the world’s best surfers come to dance with the waves—and even if you’ve never stepped on a board, watching from the lookout is an experience in itself. Bring a snack, take your time, and you just might spot a few honu (sea turtles) sunning on the beach below.
2. Explore the Town of Paia
Paia is full of character—an artsy little surf town with colorful storefronts, eclectic boutiques, and no shortage of good coffee. Whether you’re wandering through shops, chatting with locals, or grabbing a bite, Paia feels personal. There’s no rush here, and that’s part of what makes it special.
3. Visit Mama’s Fish House
A North Shore icon. Yes, it’s famous (and yes, you’ll want to make a reservation), but it’s earned every bit of its reputation. The view, the food, the aloha—it’s an experience. If you can, go for lunch so you can soak in the ocean views while you dine.
4. Watch the Sunset from Baldwin Beach
There’s something deeply peaceful about Baldwin at sunset. The beach is wide and open, the sky turns every shade of gold and pink, and the ocean glows. It’s where locals go to walk, breathe, and take it all in.
5. Grab Fresh Juice or Coffee in Haiku
Just up the road from Paia, Haiku is a bit more tucked away, but worth the drive. You’ll find little roadside cafes and juice stands with the kind of flavor that only comes from being freshly picked. It’s a quiet, green part of the island—perfect for a slow morning.
6. See the Rainbow Eucalyptus Trees
On the way to Hana, keep an eye out for the stand of rainbow eucalyptus trees near mile marker 7. Their trunks are streaked with color—nature’s version of abstract art. It’s a quick stop, but one that always makes me smile.
7. Hike the Bamboo Forest Trail
If you’re up for a little adventure, the bamboo forest (past Twin Falls) offers a magical walk through towering stalks and hidden waterfalls. It can get muddy, so bring good shoes and a spirit of adventure.
8. Grab a Treat at Ku’au Store
Just before you reach Mama’s, this charming little market has delicious breakfast burritos, smoothies, and snacks. It’s the kind of place where you’ll see surfers grabbing a coffee and locals picking up lunch.
9. Spot Turtles at the End of Baldwin Beach
Walk all the way down to the west end of Baldwin and you might find a quiet little cove where sea turtles rest in the sand. It’s peaceful, less crowded, and feels like a secret—just you and the turtles, with the sound of the ocean as company.
10. Visit My Gallery in Paia
If you're spending time on the North Shore, I’d love to personally invite you into my gallery. It’s right in the heart of Paia, filled with color, light, and the spirit of the island. Each piece is inspired by the places I love—the moon rising over the ocean, the curve of a palm, the quiet stillness of early morning light.
You’re welcome to browse, ask questions, or simply step in for a moment of calm. And if you find something that speaks to you, we’re happy to ship it home so it’s waiting for you when you return.
My goal has always been to create art that helps people hold onto the feeling of this island—long after the trip ends.
