Artist Statement

What a once-in-a- lifetime experience it has been to collaborate on artwork with my all-time favorite movie star Owen Wilson, for an ocean charity I am passionate about!

I have had the pleasure of being friends with Owen for many years, as he spends most of his off-time from making movies on Maui, regenerating his spirit through surfing.

Suitably motivated by the success of my collaboration with Kai Lenny creating an art piece to raise money for Surfrider Foundation, I joined forces with Owen, who is also a dedicated surfer. The concept was to create a board that is uniquely Owen, combining his footprints and autograph with my design aesthetic, and bringing them to life on a gorgeous cherry red gun surfboard.

The red color represents the passion that Owen has for the ocean. The waves represent the wild sea that rejuvenates Owen’s spirit. And the stylized monkey? Owen's spirit animal is the monkey. He was born on the Year of the Monkey and thought it was perfect power animal to represent him on the surfboard, along with his footprints. Monkeys are also associated with surfers throughout the world; I imagine because of surfers' agility, unpredictability and athletic prowess on the waves, which remind viewers of the extraordinary abilities of monkeys.

Owen is delighted, as am I, to contribute 100% of the proceeds to Surfrider Foundation, to aid in the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

Join our team! Can you think of a better way to be part of the solution?

“I always get excited when I get to the ocean. Surfing, diving, swimming… It doesn’t matter, I just love being in the water. There are so many challenges facing the ocean today and we need to take a stand. Supporting Surfrider Foundation and the work they do is a great way to help and protect the ocean for our kids and future generations.”

About Surfrider Foundation

Surfrider has built a network of coastal defenders who transform their passion for our coasts into lasting protection.

Bridging local knowledge with national experts in law, policy and science, our formula for success — both the playbook and the team — produces victories for our beaches year after year.

Over the last three decades we have a track record of more than 500 victories (since we started counting in 2006!). We don’t just play. We win.

We urge the American people to join us to start a new fight. The fight to free our ocean and coasts. Our nation is made up of more water than land. America’s oceans cover nearly 4.5 million square miles, which is 23% greater than U.S. landmass. The coast is a top tourist destination with more than 100 million people visiting our nation’s beaches annually. In fact, coastal recreation and tourism constitute 2.2 million jobs and contribute $115 billion to the nation’s economy every year. But clean water and healthy beaches are increasingly threatened by plastic and ocean pollution, offshore oil drilling, rollbacks to federal protections, development and rising tides. We each have a stake in taking action to ensure the places where we surf, swim, play and live are protected for this and future generations. Together, we are the United States and Oceans of America
