It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to have a gallery of my own! This has been an incredible experience of abundance and connection with my collectors and friends. I’ve enjoyed cultivating new relationships and bonding with my Maui Ohana.

It’s hard to believe it has come to an end, but here we are 30 days later. I would like to give a big shout-out to my team, Angelynn Bair and Brittany Bivens who helped create the beautiful space and work environment. We hope our efforts brought you joy along with a celebratory climate to enjoy my artwork. I look forward to hosting another Pop-Up Gallery in the future.

The famous Flatbread Company in Paia... A favorite among many!

The cool, eclectic town of Pa’ia has several interesting restaurants. The best one, in my opinion is Flatbread! It is a must experience while on Maui. I have lived near Pa’ia for over 28 years and know the town well. When Flatbread first opened their doors it had a big impact on the community. It immediately became a central location on the North Shore as the gathering place for friends and families to get together. This authentic flatbread pizzeria is loved by many.  

The menu is quite simple. They feature delicious array of flatbread pizzas and organic salads, along with scrumptious desserts. My favorites are, “organic goat cheese salad” and the  ”Pele Pesto” flatbread. For dessert, don’t miss out on the “little beach bakery brownie sundae,” served warm! They have daily specials with unique creative toppings on various flatbreads. It is amazing!

Another thing that draws me there is that someone who loves art owns Flatbread, Pa’ia! One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk in is all of the unique Hawaiian surf motif art decorating the walls throughout the restaurant. Flatbread’s founder is a dear friend of mine, Jay Gould from the East Coast. He is a huge art lover and collector. He owns several Flatbread restaurants throughout the United States, and each one is focused on local artists who embellish the walls.

I’m honored to be one of the artists presented throughout the restaurant. Jay has collected my work over many years for his personal collection, in addition to purchasing seven pieces of art for Flatbread in Pa’ia. Take a look around and see if you can’t spot my colorful Hawaiian surf paintings and Polynesian figurative work. “Night Shift” is one of my most popular prints ever! This piece has a place honor right above the bar and I couldn’t be more proud!

What to wear when dining at Flatbread?

This restaurant is super casual. Flip-flops, casual beach wear or island attire is the standard.

Reservations are encouraged for parties of eight or more, otherwise it’s first come first serve. I would suggest getting there a little early for dinner--sometimes there can be a wait out the door.

It Comes in WAVES...

Ho'olio in Hawai'i is here!

Winter in Hawai'i is here and we're excited for the big waves, salty air and trade winds.

What does winter mean to me, living in Hawaii?  

Big waves and moody skies.

That’s exactly what I wanted to depict in my new wave series. In the winter months, at certain times of day, the sky can become dark and moody while the water glows turquoise. It is an otherworldly color palette that evokes strong emotions. I tried to capture this mood of nature in my latest series. I hope you like it.

Do you prefer a frame or no frame?

Winter in Hawai'i is always such a magical time of year. The big winter swells bring in professional surfers from all over the world. Some of my favorite things to enjoy are the atmospheric night skies, gorgeous sunsets and the humpback whales sometimes making their appearance as early as November.

We can’t talk about waves without talking about our favorite professional surfer on Maui, Kai Lenny!

Kai Lenny is one of the world’s most complete watermen.

He grew up on the big waves of Maui, and with supportive parents and world-class mentors, has had a meteoric rise.  He is now at the apex of the surfing world: His accomplishments are astonishing: he's won the gruelling 50km Molokai-to-Oahu Paddleboard World Champion race three times (once in the unlimited, once in the stock stand-up division) and he shattered the across the channel record on his foil board. He was on the Professional Windsurfing Association World Wave Tour, has been runner-up at the Kite Surf Pro World Championships, and he’s won the SUP world title eight times and counting. Last year he was runner up in the Big Wave World Tour. Yet through it all, he remains modest and humble. “My favorite thing in the world is riding a wave, so as long as I’m riding a wave, I’m happy.”

The Solace of Open Spaces takes its title from Gretel Ehrlich’s seminal book on the Mountain West, referencing both the physical and emotional qualities of life among the jagged landscapes and endless wilderness of the region. Ehrlich writes of the northern territory as “the doing of a mad architect – tumbled and twisted, ribboned with faded, deathbed colors, thrust up and pulled down as if the place had been startled out of a deep sleep and thrown into pure light.”

The two artists exhibited in our debut collective, Tania Dibbs and Dick Carter, both take great inspiration from the landscape around them. Each artist has lived and worked in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley for over 30 years. Their deep exploration of the valley via painting and drawing parallels that of Ehrlich’s sentiment, at once highlighting the physical and emotional spirit of the region.

Hexton Gallery was founded by Robert Chase in 1995 and expanded upon the Chase family’s long-standing role in gallery development, artist representation, and extensive work in 20th century master prints and figurative sculpture. The gallery originated at 78th and Madison on New York’s Upper East Side, and relocated to Chicago several years later. The gallery’s archive, art production, and marketing teams reside in Chicago, while the main gallery now operates at its Cooper Avenue location in Aspen, Colorado.

Hexton’s contemporary program includes a select range of paintings, drawings, and sculpture from today’s leading mid-career and established contemporary talent. The gallery also publishes and represents artists and institutional projects in the areas of editioned printmaking, sculpture, and artist books. The Aspen location mounts eight exhibitions per year, including its Colorado Collective series, the gallery’s local arts development program.

Hexton has produced over two hundred exhibitions internationally in the last twenty-five years, both solo and in collaboration with other gallery partners. Hexton also develops and supports institutional exhibitions for its artists, having recently provided sponsorship for Eric Fischl’s If Art Could Talk at the Dallas Contemporary, Carlos Rolon’s Inside Out at the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Scott Avett’s Invisible at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The gallery continues to participate extensively in domestic and international art fairs in support of its mid-career and established artists.

Hexton’s Private Sales and Auction Services assist collectors in both the acquisition and sale of major secondary market paintings and sculpture. The gallery mounts historic exhibitions in connection with these activities, such as 2021’s Gravity’s Pull, featuring paintings and drawings from Philip Guston, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, John Baldessari and other 20th century luminaries.

NEW Abstract Series

Let’s get Abstract…

I’ve been having a wonderful time in my studio lately, focusing on the inspiring primal geometry of Polynesian tapas and Hawaiian quilts. They are opening a whole new creative process —I am simplifying the shapes into abstract forms that relate to each other in the positive and negative space. The patterns are influenced by Matisse‘s late period  cut-outs and the color sensibility has been inspired by Mark Rothko.

My intention for this work is to group the elements in an array of 4 to 6  at a time, with the “flock” creating an exciting composition in its own right, each piece relating to the others as part of a vibrant whole. (Again, like Matisse’s cut-outs).

These colorful abstracts, viewed individually or as a whole, invite the visitor to play an active role in realizing the final “work of art”.

I believe these creations offer something new and fresh for your home or place of business. I have been trying to capture the colors and soul of the islands for decades through post impressionist art. It is exhilarating to step into modern abstraction while keeping the ALOHA heart beating!

Star Light, Star Bright... NEW series fresh off the easel!

You heard that right! NEW artwork available now…

In my opinion, the most enchanting part of the day in Hawaiʻi is, “Hawaiʻi by night.” I find it to be the most impactful experience of the day. With a full moon, the atmospheric qualities of the beautiful South Pacific night skies become a spectacle for the soul. You can almost see the moisture in the air along with billowing cloud formations and dancing stars. An ensemble for the eye to see and the body to feel. 

This brings me to my most collectible subject matter featuring my MOON paintings. 

“By The Sea” reminds me of “old Hawaiʻi”. The tones and color palette are a little more subdued compared to what you may be used to me painting. The subject matter of the simplistic lifestyle featuring the Polynesian manmade hut along the shoreline of the sea. The scene is lit under the full moon, highlighting the movement of the palm trees and the “hale” as you take a stroll down the pathway to the waters edge. 

Simplicity at its very best!

Fun in the air: Hawaiian Airlines Hana Hou Magazine!

Are you headed to Hawaiʻi soon?

Well, keep your eyes open in-flight! I have just launched a 2-ad campaign in Hana Hou Magazine—Hawaiian Airlines in-flight publication. I am very excited about this venture, and wanted to share it with all of you. 

I have a long history of being associated with Hawaiian Airlines. In fact, it goes back 28 years. Back then, I was honored to have been chosen as the featured Hawaiian artist on the in-flight video, magazine and menu covers. 

The ads feature my Kim McDonald Art Gallery in Paia and highlight the 5 locations of the Martin and MacArthur Galleries, which showcase my work on four islands.

Hana Hou Magazine is the most-read magazine in the state of Hawaiʻi, despite the fact that one can only find it on Hawaiian Airlines flights!  People often take the magazine with them as a souvenir or a way to access some of the beautiful profiles in the ads and all the insightful magazine articles. It is a great read!

My favorite subject matter, WAHINE

Celebrating Hawaiian, Polynesian women…

I have always been inspired to paint figurative work since I can remember--and that’s a long time! I started painting when I was 11, and drawing since I was two. I am passionate about the female figure and what it represents to me as an artist--beautiful shapes, sinuous curves, and powerful compositions. My intention is always to capture the vitality and sensibility of my models.
I was drawn to Hawaii over 42 years ago. My first trip to the islands was a trip to Kauai, which had a profound impact on my life! I was fascinated by the extraordinary beauty, vibrant colors, captivating landscapes--and of course, the spellbinding night moon! This lush atmosphere suited me perfectly as an athlete and an artist. I had found the place to live my life.
As I explored my new home, it did not take long for me to develop a deep fascination with the Hawaiian, Polynesian women. Not only was I struck by their extraordinary beauty, (which was there in abundance) but also of their proud embodiment of Island culture.
When I first arrived on the islands , I soon learned that our perception of the Hawaiian woman on the mainland was, for the most part, a myth. My observation and experience of native women was quite different. What struck me the most was their strength! And their knowingness. And their ability to be the powerful grounding force in each Polynesian family unit. It became evident to me that here, there was an evolved atmosphere of a Matriarchal Society.
This realization soon informed my portraits. I wanted to portray these women as not only as sensual, radiant beings, but to also celebrate their essential roles as the self-assured guardians of the Polynesian culture In Hawaii.
Gauguin depicted the Polynesian woman as a source of voyeurism and vulnerable beauty to be desired. My aim is to depict the Island Polynesian women as the beautiful, strong, indomitable figures of the culture that they embody.

“Sweet Dreams Mahina” is my latest figurative painting in my new collection of Polynesian women. I love this subject matter, which for me depicts the Hawaiian Polynesian woman as strong and sensual. In my experience of living in Hawaii for 30 years, the Polynesian women are the powerhouse of the family unit.

I’m super excited about this series as it’s a great opportunity for those of you who love my work to collect a softer color palette. I am working with the positive and negative shapes, complementary and secondary complementary colors. Here I focus on simplifying shapes and using an outline quality that you can find in some of my heroes such as Matisse, Cézanne and Gauguin. 

I am loving this new series, and I hope you do as well.

Where does my inspiration come from?

A composition inspired by the world famous, Henri Matisse. I few of my paintings in this series are highly influenced by Matisse and his early works, “The Harem of the Odalisques.”

The Odalisques was Matisse’s own way of extending Fauvism, giving it a more tranquil appearance by the careful use of line.

In the example above I chose to use a wooden frame to match the skin tone of the subjects in the painting. This is called a floating frame. As you can see, there is a space between the art and the frame. This gives a modern, polished look. I always paint around the edges and corners as well so the movement of the piece continues around the canvas. All of our museum quality gallery wrapped prints have mirrored edging as well, so you can enjoy the piece framed or unframed. A frame can really compliment the artwork giving it a complete and tied together look.

In this example you will see an unframed gallery wrapped painting. Most of my clients don’t frame their artwork. Each piece comes stretched on canvas and ready to hang. I paint around the edges about an inch and three quarters giving it a contemporary look. It’s easy to move around and you can enjoy the art before choosing a frame should you decide to at a later time.

Why I choose the very best…

I consider myself a colorist. I fashion my artwork after the master Artists of the Post-Impressions and Impressionist movements. 

Post-Impressionists created their unique paintings through the use of a patterned application of paint. Utilizing vivid color combinations, simplification of form and composition, which in turn resulted in gorgeous expressive paintings. 

How does one create such lush vivid color? By choosing the right paint! I personally use Sennelier brand, a French manufacturer that creates the highest quality pigments on the market. I have tested A LOT of different paints over my lifetime and these are by far the best!

 Today Sennelier paint pigments are still being collected and mined from some of the same mining pits that were used to create paint in France during the time of the great artists such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, and Matisse to name a few. These artists  created their masterpieces with very similar paint that I’m using today.  What an incredible legacy.

These paints also come with a hefty price tag. It is well worth it to me, as my goal is to provide my collectors with the highest quality artwork that will last a lifetime. The result is a strong impact through color within all of my pieces. I hope you enjoy the visual journey through my oil paintings and my bold use of color.

Matisse Inspired Cut-outs

In the late 1940’s, Henri Matisse turned almost exclusively to cut paper as his primary medium, and scissors as his chief implement, introducing a radically new operation that came to be called a cut-out.

I am so excited to create my cutout series and am inspired by these techniques.

Matisse grew up in a textile-manufacturing hub in the North of France, near Belgium – a centre of the silk-weaving industry. Fabrics and fabric catalogues displayed in shop windows were a familiar sight. And of course, opulent textiles and tile patterns are big players in Matisse’s Algerian paintings. Matisse, the master of pattern and color, was inspired by textiles throughout his long career with a strong influence in the “Hawaiian quilt.”

Matisse’s art was always big on line and colour – but in the cut-outs these are distilled to their pure essence. The shapes and colours dance and interplay.

Mama's Fish House Evening Delight

Where can you find me when I’m on Maui? At my favorite restaurant, Mama’s Fish House. I’ll be with friends at the Koa wood bar having pupus and beautiful umbrella cocktails.

Mama's Fish House restaurant is one of my happy places. It reminds me of TAHITI, a place I resonate with so much. Mama’s celebrates the Hawaiian and Polynesian culture with a warm island vibe. Not only is the food delicious and hospitality inviting, the view is to die for. 

This brings me to my latest series of paintings depicting the beautiful effervescent views from the dining room overlooking the beach. I am proud to say Mama’s has seven of my paintings in their collection throughout the last two decades. It’s a connection that gives me great delight and is an honor.... to be embraced by this iconic Maui establishment.

My heart goes out to the personnel and their families who have been directly impacted by the loss of employment due to Covid-19. My memory of the staff, their smiling faces and the warm personal touch stays fresh and clear in my core and in my mind. 

This series has allowed me to continue my connection with the restaurant and all the great times I’ve had there. I hope you enjoy the spectacular views, and feel the warmth of the tropics.

Celebrating Mamas Fish House and all the memorable wonderful times we’ve had there!

How do you pay homage to a legend?  By celebrating it in its own dedicated  painting series!

I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this new series of original oil paintings, it’s a first for me to explore and paint the gorgeous view from Mama’s Fish House dining room, looking out over beautiful Mamas Beach with the familiar canoe and stunning sunset. Mamas Fish House restaurant is one of my favorite places to hang out on Maui. I love the staff and I love the dining experience, but mostly I love the view! I have tried to capture the  jeweled blue colors in the night sky, the glistening ocean, the flickering light of the tiki torches and the mysterious night moon. 

Hopefully these paintings will evoke that “nowhere else in the world” feeling that you experienced when you gazed out from our favorite island haven!

 When I first arrived to Hawai'i I was so impressed with the night skies. They are so romantic and atmospheric with dancing stars. I’ve been inspired over the years with the way the wind flows through the tropical forest and the lush foliage. I love the velvet feeling of the evenings with so much moisture in the air. My moon paintings are the most sought after genres. Hawaiiana Motif Series

A blast from the past...
From living in Hawaii for decades, one of biggest inspirations for my artwork has been the primal patterns from the Polynesian culture. Whether it be tattoos, vintage fabrics or petroglyphs, my fascination for these symbols depicting the Hawaiian Heritage continues.

I have created a new series of paintings that revisit and incorporate these motifs as borders , framing my island subject matter.
Gorgeous seascapes, serene moonscapes and iconic churches.

I have created a new series of paintings directly influenced by my favorite places on earth, Hanalei and the Napali coast line on the north shore of Kauai. Kauai has always been a source of inspiration for me for decades. With an abundance of majestic waterfalls, scenic hikes, beautiful beaches, transcendent sunsets, and of course the quintessential missionary church, Wai'oli Hui'ia.

Kauai is the crown jewel of the Hawaiian Islands, in my humble opinion.
